Enterprise Wide Area Protection Coordination Process

Our platform enables detailed modeling of digital assets through a component-based structure, allowing for the classification and organization of individual parts. Each asset can include multiple components arranged hierarchically for easier management. We’ve developed a standardized type-level design, similar to the IPS® asset type concept, to streamline tracking, analysis, and version control. Predefined component hierarchies can be auto-assigned during asset creation or later. IPS® Component Management offers advanced tools for managing digital devices and software components, ensuring compliance with regulatory, cybersecurity, and asset management standards. The system's rich data structure supports efficient tracking, filtering, and browsing, providing quick insights into vulnerabilities and maintenance needs for full IPS®SYSTEMS support.

IPS® Setting Workflow Management (IPS®SWM) is part of the solution, and it allows users to control all activities related to relay settings by utilizing a three-tiered structure. System Change Notification (i.e., description of any event or situation that may result in the modification of one or more relay settings), Global Setting Requests (affecting several physical relays), and Relay Setting Requests (involving one single physical relay). Each level has its workflow – the Global Setting Request (GSR) workflow is fully customizable.

Protective relay settings information is exchanged with third-party settings calculation tools and a network model. This exchange is the base and precondition for any Wide Area Protection Coordination (WAPC) study, resulting in settings change requests from the WAPC. The study can be sent back to the IPS® maintenance management process and distributed to protection maintenance teams for their commissioning.

FAQs about Protective Relays and IED Management

Protection Relay Management in the context of IPS involves specialized Asset and Configuration Management for Protective Relays and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). This management supports data handling throughout the setting and configuration lifecycle, from the initial request for changes through development, approval, and commissioning to final verification.

Network Model Management (NMM) integration is important because it significantly enhances the accuracy and efficiency of relay settings information by centralizing network models in a single repository. It imports data from various tools and systems such as CAPE, Aspen, SCADA, etc., addressing the challenge of isolated data. Additionally, it integrates diagrams for higher transparency and validation, ensuring consistent relay settings information for current and future network changes.

The solution ensures compliance through several key features. It manages data from initial request to final verification. Additionally, it includes a large protection and IED master-type library, which is continually updated to meet the latest standards. NMM integration improves the accuracy of relay settings and serves as a central information source for network changes. Additionally, the solution fully supports the IEC61850 and NERC standards (PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-026, PRC-027), ensuring adherence to industry regulations.

The main advantage is that the solution includes the IPS® Relay Expert module group, which is specialized for protection relays. It manages power system data, relay locations, documentation, settings, and test activities. It increases efficiency through automatic data import, test templates, and reports, while system reliability improves with accurate protection settings management. The module leverages existing protection data models and test templates, offering fast, cost-effective implementation.

The solution for Protective Relays and IED Management supports data management throughout the settings and configuration lifecycle, from the initial request for their change through the development, approval, and commissioning process to the final verification.
