National Grid SA’s Journey to Smart Protection Data Management with IPS

Middle East EPIS

National Grid Saudi Arabia

National Grid Saudi Arabia (SA) operates one of the largest and oldest electricity transmission networks in the region, serving a growing population and industrial base with over 1,000 substations and more than 120,000 protective relays. The network demands high reliability, safety, and efficient asset management to meet increasing load demands and support grid modernization. IPS collaborated with National Grid SA to implement the Protection Data Management System (PDMS) integrated with the upgraded IPS®EPIS (Enterprise Protection Information System).

Some of the results achieved included:

  1. Enabled comprehensive field data collection via web, desktop, and mobile applications, standardizing workflows and improving maintenance monitoring
  2. Integrated systems to streamline data exchange and establish a sustainable protection settings workflow cycle
  3. Achieved higher data accuracy for protection relays, enabling faster fault analysis, reliable settings implementation, and effective relay tracking
  4. Enhanced maintenance efficiency, boosted network reliability, and positioned National Grid SA as a global leader in automated protection data management
