Protection Setting Repository (PSR) – Project Implementation | Ellevio

Ellevio is a leading electricity distribution company in Sweden. It focuses on delivering a reliable power supply and investing in the future of sustainable energy infrastructure.

As part of Vision 2030’s Ellevio Digital Journey toward a future-proof network and a sustainable energy system, we have successfully completed a seven-month Protection Setting Repository (PSR) implementation project at Ellevio. All planned works were executed on schedule, ensuring a quick and efficient project completion.

PSR implementation

One of the primary challenges Ellevio faced before the PSR implementation was managing the ERP, the legacy protection database, and file system repository information across several disconnected systems. This made protection management time-consuming and difficult, particularly in tracking setting lifecycle information. The PSR project was initiated to centralize and optimize the process of protection data management.

A significant task for the IPS team involved mapping and migrating settings from a legacy protection database, which stored data for older protection devices and settings that were either non-existent or inaccessible. IPS and Ellevio confirmed the successful migration through intermediate testing protocols.

PSR benefits

Throughout the project, we analysed, verified, and migrated setting and parameter data from approximately 6000 locations, involving 18000 protection relays with over 765000 setting parameters. The PSR data is now consolidated and managed within the IPS®EPIS (Enterprise Protection Information System) solution.

The IPS®EPIS and IPS®SmartGridDI trigger service enables Ellevio to independently manage (supporting all CRUD operations) the location and asset information between the ERP and IPS systems using standardized MS Excel templates. This flexibility allows Ellevio to expand the IPS®EPIS system in the future with verified and consolidated data.

The most significant benefit of the PSR project is a uniform approach to managing protection settings, including complete setting history, lifecycle information, and parameters. The data source for protection analyses is now instantly available, based on actual and verified configurations and parameters. Furthermore, protection primary setting values are utilized as a data source for SCADA alarm limits.

To Ellevio’s great satisfaction, IPS has also facilitated a higher level of automation in creating setting reports for contractors. Ellevio experienced the IPS team’s reliability, competence, and professionalism throughout all phases of the implementation project.

Benefits:

  • Reduced risk of outages
  • Improved management of temporary settings
  • Enhanced tools for documenting settings
  • Increased work efficiency
  • Higher quality alarm limits in Operation Planning and Dispatch
  • Enhanced analysis of alternative feeders

Ellevio Future Plans

Ellevio aims to introduce equipment and processes for the remote control of Secondary Substations to enable quicker issue resolution and switching during regular work hours. Another objective is to establish a platform for the continuous collection and storage of measurement and operational data for network analysis, development, operational analysis, and predictive maintenance. This also includes the creation of basic support tools and applications for these purposes. Establishing processes and operations for analysing networks, operations, and maintenance will be a key focus.
