IPS Asset Performance Management

Now that Gartner1 has released their 2019 Market Guide for Asset Performance Management Software2, it is time to review the state of the APM solution here at IPS and project the future of IPS in the APM space.

For IPS, our desire has always been to provide a complete solution for our clients. We have concentrated our efforts on the Power Utility Industry as that industry represents our greatest strength because of the number of professionals from that industry that we employ. From the beginning, we created an EAM system with a World-Leading data model library that was designed from the ground up to provide enhanced capabilities to not only provide traditional Preventative Maintenance through time-based maintenance cycles but Condition-Based Maintenance through exceptional (referential) and calculated cycle times. This allowed you to adjust the maintenance schedule based on logic such as age or usage.

Moving forward several years, it became clear that it was not enough to react to conditions but to attempt to predict when conditions could happen. Enter APM. Asset Performance Management is still evolving at different rates in different industries and is largely driven by intensely asset-centric industries where the need to minimize system downtime is essential.

Here is the primary pain point in every asset-centric industry. How do I increase the reliability of my system and minimize downtime without expanding my maintenance budget? The answer, while not simple, is not as complicated as you may think. When calculating the health of an asset by aggregating the data collected from your EAM system and calculating the rate of deterioration of each of your assets, it becomes possible not only to predict asset failures but to maximize maintenance activities by concentrating effort on those assets at greatest risk.

When using advanced analytics to calculate the probability of failure, cost of failure, rate of deterioration, and end of life, it becomes easier to make strategic decisions such as when it is more advantageous to replace aging assets rather than maintaining them. Optimize your maintenance strategies not only by moving maintenance on assets with greater critical risk forward, but also delay maintenance activities on assets with low-risk values.

Unlike other APM solutions, IPS offers the complete package. Our APM package is fully integrated with our existing systems, while still completely able to run on top of a 3rd party EAM system. IPS has made great strides making sure it can fill the gaps left in other solutions, from sending risk data and OPEX/CAPEX analysis to an AIP (Asset Investment Planning) system, to collect data in the field with our fully integrated mobile solution named MobApp.

When contemplating what a complete solution looks like, consider the following:

  • Through integration with our EAM system, update your maintenance plan by automatically creating needed maintenance actions or notifications.
  • Through integration with our Outage Management module, maximize your outage schedule by moving maintenance activities forwards or back to take advantage of scheduled outages.
  • Through integration with our RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) module identify, define, and track failure modes and perform root cause analysis to help make informed decisions to improve your overall maintenance strategy.
  • Use industry-recognized analytics such as Weibull Curves, Duval Triangles, and Rogers Ratio.
  • Use nearly 150 out-of-the-box algorithms or create your own in the IPS analytics engine called SmartGridDI (no third-party analytics engine needed).
  • Define or change existing inputs for any analysis. Define or change the weighting for all defined attributes.
  • Create Rules Algorithms to create data validation for any data value in the system.
  • The same system is available On-Premise or through SaaS (Cloud)
  • Integrate with 3rd party data systems such as ERP, OsiPi, SCADA/EMS, ArcGIS, and more.
  • Too much functionality to list it all here. Come visit our solutions page to find out more information!

This is an area of constant evolution and growth here at IPS. We work closely with our clients to stay on the leading edge of functionality in APM.

In the context of Generation, Transmission, and Distribution Operations, an outage is an event causing one or more elements of the electrical grid to lose primary voltage.  During the outage, the electrical grid, in whole or in part, cannot perform one or more of the primary functions of generating, transporting or delivering electrical energy.  The outage definitions are set down by the IEEE standards 762 – Generation, 859 – Transmission, and 1366 – Distribution.  Depending on the regulatory agency you are dealing with, there are different reporting mandates, but every electrical utility has a need to track and manage system outages.

An effective Outage Management System (OMS) can assist system operators in providing quicker response times for outage events, faster restoration leading to reduced outage durations, which leads to greater reliability for the entire Grid

The IPS-OMS™ is specifically designed to perform the outage planning function of power system utilities, including the management of all outages. The main features and vocabulary used in the system are driven by the existing processes and terminology currently used by power system transmission operators in Europe, North America, and Australia.  The system is designed to interface with all external and internal systems which require information exchange (including Outage Coordination with Interconnects), manage work permits and work requests related to scheduled outage plans, and manage forced outages as well.

The Outage Browser allows you to view outages in 3 different ways.

  • A system diagram view highlighting the outage

Diagram Insights about our Outage Management Solution

  • A list view allowing full filtering

List Insights about our Outage Management Solution

  • A Gantt view for outage information

Gantt Insights about our Outage Management Solution

The IPS-OMS™ provides full support of the entire Outage Management Process.

  • For Planned (Scheduled) outages, this includes managing the Outage Requests, assigning the requests to an outage plan, managing the approval process, and allowing full Outage Reporting and Scheduling.
  • For Unplanned (Maintenance) outages, this includes managing the Outage Requests, managing the approval process, and allowing full Outage Reporting and Scheduling.
  • For Forced outages, the system supports outage event management, root cause investigation, the fault clearance process, complete protection operation investigations, COMTRADE management, CB Operation Analyses by COMTRADE Analytics, and Forced Outage Reporting.

The overall goal is to simplify the Outage Process and to reduce the number of Planned Outages, as well as their duration.  Having a single system to coordinate information reduces work related to outage management by increasing data quality.  By using modern CIM compliant Topological Connectivity Model as well as the Asset Hierarchical Model, you can optimize the Outage Management Process by mapping and correlating all related information.  The system uses powerful algorithms and calculations to provide analytics to assist in predicting outage effects and estimated time to restoration when outages occur.  As an additional benefit, the system allows you to optimize maintenance by grouping all connected network assets to be maintained by one outage.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is the largest electricity utility in Malaysia and a leading utility company in Asia. Listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia with almost RM 142 billion in assets, the Company’s more than 35,000 employees serve an estimated 9.1 million customers in Peninsular Malaysia.

IPS has recently implemented a world-leading Asset Performance Management System (APMS) for TNB’s distribution and transmission networks, with two separate projects running concurrently.

The establishment of the world-class APMS for TNB included the following critical and complex work by IPS:

  • The functionality of data modeling for asset analytics such as asset health index (AHI), asset criticality index (ACI), asset risk index (ARI), asset cost, dashboard, reports and predictive analytics for transformers and circuit breakers
  • Integration with TNB’s existing systems which are required for asset performance analytics, allowing near real-time monitoring
  • Data modeling for asset analytics i.e AHI, ACI, ARI, asset performance and cost, dashboard and reports, predictive analytics, system integration, and real-time monitoring
  • Impact analysis on asset cost and risk based on variable simulation of asset condition
  • Integration with 3rd party GIS such as Google Map APMS provides the dashboard and reports view of all asset health from Google Maps. Users can view the drill down reports from Google Map dashboard
  • Integration with Work Order Management (SAP EAM and IBM Maximo) with the ability to auto-create fault/defect/abnormality notification based on AHI, ACI, and ARI.
  • Conversion/ migration of structured and unstructured data sources, which are required for Asset Performance analytics in TNB.

Within these two concurrent projects for TNB, IPS performed end to end integration with very complex requirements and configurations applied.

In the near future, TNB intends to extend the application of APMS on other asset classes such as isolators, surge arrestors, CVTs, CTs, and protection relays. IPS is happy to continue to partner with and support TNB in its drive to continuously improve and expand its valuable Asset Performance Management System in the future.
