Recently IPS-ENERGY USA participated in the DistribuTECH Conference and Exhibition in San Antonio, Texas. DistribuTECH is the leading annual transmission and distribution event and has more than 500 companies attending each year.

One of the best parts of the DistribuTECH event is the interaction with visitors to our booth. There are a great variety of software integrators, utility workers and other industry professionals who share knowledge and problem solve both in formal summit tracks and informally gathered around booths. Thanks to Jerry Day and Randy Norman for their hard work to share IPS at DistribuTECH.

What 2020 will bring?

New year, new opportunities for growth. What challenges will the new year bring?

We could say that 2019 was a fruitful year for IPS. Besides our 15th birthday and many other important events, we are taking our mention in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant as one of the biggest highlights of the year. We have also won major contracts in Malaysia, Europe, and North America and we are not intending to stop here. In 2020 we will continue to grow and develop together with our customers, partners, and employees.

We are looking forward to bigger challenges and achievements. We will continue to build on our well-recognized Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) solution, and our other world-leading Asset Performance Management (APM), number one ranked Protection Data Management, IED Configuration Management, CIM based Network Model Management and Outage Management as well as other highly-specialized and advanced solutions in Power Utility domain. Together with our partners, we will continue to implement our solutions in other industries, such as gas, water, and other infrastructures and facilities.

IPS-EPIS™ Training for PGCIL in India

Last week, Joze Bizjak held training for Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL), with the aim of familiarization with Enterprise Protection Information System IPS-EPIS™.

The main focus of onsite training was to increase understanding within the Enterprise Protection Information System and to deepen the knowledge about the usability that IPS-EPIS™ brings. Through the training, they have covered main topics such as Protection Data Management, Protection Setting and Testing management as well as Setting Life Cycle Management and Setting Change Management.

We would like to thank PGCIL for the great hospitality at POWERGRID Academy of Leadership PAL. Modern training facilities and excellent cooperation with trainees enabled IPS to conduct the training as planned.

We are looking forward to establishing an even deeper partnership with the PGCIL in the future.

IPS and IT Security – Your most critically important business function!

The fourth industrial revolution is the current and developing environment in which disruptive technologies and trends such as the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) are changing the way we live and work.
Security IPS and IT Security Your most critically important business function!

For many years, the software industry has been producing unsecured software, due to customers and the market expecting high quality, chip software, very fast!
Some years ago, IPS recognized the critical importance of cybersecurity as a key business function and we established the IPS IAM (Identity and Access Management) project.

The whole enterprise software industry is moving forward in the cloud-based domain to support mobile devices, virtual and augmented reality, AI, IoT.
From a security point of view, this was a big challenge in developing the IPS IAM project.
The solution was to make an authentication service with the latest protocol support who supports SSO, Auth against single or multiple user stores (AD, Azure, Social network, IPS local DB).

There are many complex issues and factors to consider and this article will focus just on two areas, as follows:

Authentication => Who are you?

• Issues an Identity Token
• Identity system does not have intimate knowledge of application-specific authorization rules
• Do authorization as close as possible to the resource you are trying to protect
• IPS Identity Provider

Authorization => What are you authorized to do?
• Issues an Access Token
• A token can be re-used at several places
• Claims might have a different meaning for each consumer
• IPS Authorization Service
Big Picture IPS and IT Security Your most critically important business function!

AUTHENTICATION IPS Identity Provider

Token Srvice IPS and IT Security Your most critically important business function!

IPS Identity Provider, based on OIDC certified framework, is very flexible and easy to integrate.
• We can support authentication against multiple user stores, e.g. authentication proxy.
• We support legacy systems and protocols, so we can integrate with your existing security and expose modern OIDC Identity Provider, supported by the majority of companies, on the other end.
• All the other vendors with support for OIDC already have support for IPS Identity Provider.

Key features:

• Uses the latest security protocols for authentication and authorization (OpenID Connect and oAuth2).
• Single Sign-On (SSO)
• Supports multi-factor authentication
• Uses the latest encryption protocols to encrypt sensitive data in transit and on rest
• Identity Provider (IdP) and Federation Gateway (it can use other IdP, i.e. Active Directory)
• Supports authorization mapping from AD security groups so System Admins can maintain only one user store like AD
• Supports all major security standards and specifications (SAML 2.0, WS-Federation) so we can support legacy systems as well
• Supports Windows authentication
• Platform independent
Authorization IPS and IT Security Your most critically important business function!

After successful authentication, the client app will contact the authorization server to get all permissions assigned to the logged-in user.
Web API receives a request from the client application and it also goes to the authorization server to get the list of permissions for that particular user and system.
Tokens can be re-used at several places and claims might have different meanings for each consumer.

Optimization of IPS-SYSTEMS™ usage for Jerusalem District Electricity Company (JDECO)

Our colleagues Raad Barrouq and Mohamed Shafik held a training for our customer JDECO in Amman in order for them to get to know their recently upgraded System.

The main intention was to increase understanding within different areas of our Software (IPS™-Asset Management, IPS™-Maintenance Concept, IPS™-Planning, IPS™-Work Ordering, IPS™-Work Execution, IPS™-Maintenance Analysis, IPS-Calculation Studio™, IPS-RELEX™, IPS-PSM™, IPS-PSFM™, IPS-SWM™, Administration, IPS-MobApp™).

The onsite training/workshop aimed to transfer knowledge to our longtime customer JDECO on how to use different modules in IPS-SYSTEMS™ in order to optimize their usage of different modules in IPS-SYSTEMS™ which they already had a license for and to teach JDECO how to use protection management system in IPS-SYSTEMS™ (IPS-RELEX™, IPS-PSM™, IPS-PSFM™, IPS-SWM™) and to guide JDECO on the implementation process of JDECO’s protection devices data in IPS-SYSTEMS™ and to guide them about the field data collection. Additionally, the IPS-Team introduced the steps from the planning of maintenance actions to executing them IPS-SYSTEMS™.

1NICHE PLAYERS (Source: Gartner)
“Although there might be an assumption that vendors in the other quadrants are better choices for new EAM buyers, in certain circumstances Niche Players are just as good or better choices for prospective users. This is because they might focus on a geographic or vertical market that is meaningful to particular users or be focused on a market segment less concerned with on-premises delivery, scalability or complex processes. However, this focus alone is not a compelling-enough differentiator for a vendor to ascend to a leadership position. It would also have to perform well in other dimensions. Although some vendors in the Niche Players quadrant often have solid EAM solutions for a specific industry, segment or geography, they are not as broad as the EAM solutions in other quadrants.
Gartner, Inc. | G00376117 Page 31 of 40. Key Characteristics:
  • Focuses primarily on a geographic or vertical market
  • Not a generally differentiated offering, although it can have some unique capabilities
  • Not yet well established and visible in the market
  • Not a broad or deep EAM
  • Market momentum and product or company viability may be in question
A Niche Player should be considered for inclusion on a shortlist when the specific project requirements match the vendor’s specific strengths (see the Strengths and Cautions sections for each vendor).”
