ESB Group have been using IPS Energy products since 2007 in both ESB International and ESB Networks. The system was introduced initially to: capture commissioning and maintenance test data, store data and make available for future reference to optimise maintenance activities and enable generation of customised report,

The latest expansion of the IPS system in ESB Networks has enabled field technicians to capture inspection data on iPads via the Mob-App. This data then feeds into the creation of Asset Health Indices.

ESB International

The IPS system was implemented in Asset Management Services of ESB International in 2007. It is currently in use by site based and office staff via laptop computers as an on premise solution. The system has been embedded as the primary maintenance tool for the Maintenance department of Asset Management Services. The system covers all assets currently serviceable on the electricity network from 10 kV to 400 kV.

The primary modules in use are Asset Management, Maintenance Concept, Work Ordering & Work Execution.

The foundation of the ESB Internationals use of IPS is based on a large and accurate Asset Type Library which facilitates the creation of specific templates for these assets.

Tasks are performed via pre-populated templates assigned to specific asset types within Work Execution, ensuring a consistent and clear method for all work activities. These templates are available to all users within the IPS system and can be partly of fully completed dependent on the task at hand. Upon synchronisation to the database, other users of the system are free to view all completed or partly completed maintenance tasks. This eliminates duplication and allows for tasks to be completed by more than one individual.

All test files, results and data recorded from site is now captured immediately on completion of the task. The format of each test file type is recognised by IPS and as such once synchronisation is performed it allows for immediate reporting of findings/results to the Client(s).

Remote synchronisation capabilities allow the field users to remain on site for extended periods without the need for regular return to the office for downloading of results. This has the advantage of work flexibility and enables the user to spend more time on site to complete work. There is also a greatly reduced likelihood Of data loss due to loss/theft/failure of hardware.

ESB Network

In 2016 ESB Networks expanded the use of the IPS system to include mobile device data capture and creation of Asset Health Indices (AHI) for all substation primary equipment. This project primarily used the new IPS Mob-App on iPads so that field technicians could record substation inspection data in both on-line and off-line mode. The off-line capability was developed during the project to overcome the issue of poor 3G/4G mobile signal at more remote substations.

This data was then linked to the historical diagnostic data in the ESB International database to calculate AHI for the primary assets. The information is displayed in both dashboards and interactive maps with alert indication in the WebSuite module.

Subsequently the oil laboratory test result database has been linked up so that our AHI are automatically recalculated upon new oil analysis test results being uploaded from the laboratory. Integration with the company ERP system, SAP, was also successfully achieved via a manual process until ESB Networks are in a position to fully integrate.

In the near future ESB Networks plan to utilise the Business Process Management and Topology Manager modules to gain further efficiencies in our processes.

American Electric Power (AEP) selected the IPS-SYSTEMS application suite from IPS-Intelligent Process Solutions (IPS) in 2013 to replace several in-house developed systems for managing substation assets and their condition. The initial implementation was completed in September 2014 for generation assets and June 2015 for all Transmission substation assets. The IPS system is the official system of record for all substation asset data. This includes technical asset properties and all historical data associated with Maintenance and Inspection activities including conditional notifications.

The IPS system has extensive capabilities to define work content for field execution. Then, the planning and scheduling modules are used to create work plans and scheduled work orders with specific work content. AEP is using this part of the system to plan and schedule all preventive maintenance, testing with condition estimation. Inspection work orders are created on demand. Then the IPS work execution module is used to execute the work in the field and collect data required for condition assessment. Work execution can be done when connected to the network or completely mobile when not connected to the network.

Extensive amounts of data are being collected in the field and stored in the database. These data are used for normal operations reporting but also for planning maintenance, based in part on the condition of the asset.

The system is being used to manage over 350,000 assets in over 4,000 substations by over 1,600 users

Overview of DP&L's use of IPS for substation asset management, relay asset management and compliance.

DP&L implemented IPS-EPIS for management of protective relay assets in 2009. With the IPS team, DP&L converted over 11,000 paper records to electronic records. Users indicate that IPS met all user needs including ease of use, ease of settings management, compliance requirements (date/time/id stamp), and record keeping. The implementation of IPS resulted in significant improvements in record keeping and progress in relay settings change management. Feedback from users has been very positive.

In December of 2010, and on the heels of the successful IPS implementation for protective relays, DP&L implemented IPS-Energy for substation asset management and equipment maintenance. As Ohio has unique compliance requirements, IPS worked with DP&L to develop custom tools to help manage compliance. DP&L successfully implemented the program and has made great strides in asset management (from cradle to grave), cost tracking, recall management, equipment trends, compliance and more. Field employees can work "disconnected" with access to breaker and transformer equipment manuals, work orders, equipment history etc. Feedback on this system has been positive.

General Comments

DP&L has successfully and effectively used IPS to manage Substation equipment, record management of relay settings and test records as well as to meet state and governmental regulations. IPS as well as its back-office support team have been responsive to DP&L's needs and has worked collaboratively with DP&L during software implementation as well as needed software upgrades.

21st December 2016 – Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia;

National Grid Saudi Arabia (SA) is celebrating together with the software system house IPS-Intelligent Process Solutions GmbH (IPS) the successful implementation of the “Protection Data Management System (PDMS)” for their transmission network after only ten months of work.

Due to the significant importance of the whole project National Grid SA arranged the project finalization celebration to look back at the two project phases. The top management, incl. the CEO Mr. Laith Al Bassam of National Grid SA, attended the celebration as a reward for IPS and its innovative and path breaking asset and protection management software solution for electrical power networks.

National Grid SA declared this project as a reference and world’s first and biggest project in the field of protection data and setting management software implementation for power networks. Data from more than 120,000 protection relays with more than 170,000,000 setting parameters have been collected kingdom-wide by IPS and NG engineers, verified, and migrated into centralized IPS-EPIS™ (Enterprise Protection Information System) within the first phase.

The successful accomplishment of the first phase was only possible by using IPS Field Data Collection (IPS-FDC™), a wizard-based field data collection tool. This IPS software tool is specialized on protective relay data collection, and offers the opportunity of remote and automated data quality supervision. This allows field data collection in the shortest and optimized time with controlled data quality, and automated data conversion in the production system. Additionally, IPS established a “World Remote Data Control and Supervision Center” which is acting as a control and supervision center for all data collecting activities world-wide.

The scope of the second phase contained the development of a company-wide CIM XML network topology model and the integration of CAPE™ software - a product from our US technology partner Electrocon International, Inc. (EII). Also part of this phase was mapping the existing IPS-Enterprise Protection Information System (IPS-EPIS™) hierarchical data model with a CIM XML Topological Model to establish integrated and highly automated protection setting calculations. Furthermore, this set the fundament for Wide Area Protection Coordination (WAPC) done by Quanta Technologies.

This project was explicitly regarded from National Grid Saudi Arabia because of a very efficient and unselfish knowledge transfer to NG engineers. Today, NG Engineers independently manage this high-end technology, and belong to the top world-class users.

Due to the successful implementation of the IPS-Protection Data Management System, National Grid SA and IPS signed a contract for a new big project in 2017. Within this new project IPS will be working on the optimisation of the maintenance process, and will upgrade the IPS-Enterprise Protection Information System to an IPS-ENERGY™ Enterprise Asset Data and Maintenance Management System with more than 1,200 users.

After the successful rollout of the PDMS Phase 1 (Protection Data Management System) (see below the highlights of PDMS Phase 1) IPS is starting into the second phase of the PDMS project at Saudi Electricity Company’s transmissions department National Grid SA at the beginning of 2016.

The scope of the second phase includes the development of a company-wide CIM XML network model integrating CAPE™, and mapping the existing IPS-Enterprise Protection Information System (IPS-EPIS™) to establish an integrated protection data management with automated WAPC (Wide Area Protection Coordination).

In this project IPS-Intelligent Process Solutions GmbH integrates CAPE™ – a product from our well-known US technology partner Electrocon International, Inc. (EII). Furthermore, IPS is cooperating with Quanta Technology to finalize the world’s first and biggest project in implementing country-wide Protection Data Management System within 10 months. The project will include more than 120.000 protection relays with more than 100.000.000 setting parameters.

Intelligent Process Solutions GmbH (IPS) announces today the implementation of its advanced Enterprise Asset Management System at American Electric Power Co Inc (NYSE: AEP). The system provides a comprehensive repository of all asset data related to over 5,000 Transmission, Generation and Distribution substations in 15 states.

The functional scope of the system includes Work Planning, Workflow Management, Scheduling and mobile Field Execution as well as intelligent, conditional evaluation and diagnostics of maintenance and inspection results and creation of follow-up actions. Collected data are also available for use in the advanced analytics modules.

The project began nearly two years ago and will increase productivity, reduce errors and assist in regulatory compliance. Additional projects are anticipated to embrace a broader scope of system capabilities and consolidate other existing systems.

IPS-RELEX™ is a sophisticated and flexible tool for managing relay assets, settings and test schedules/results. We are very impressed with the high degree of customizable. The Bi-directional interface with CAPE is excellent. It is evident that this product is designed by people who understand the needs of protection engineers.

IPS-RELEX™ is extremely versatile. Users can attach service bulletins and manuals on the relay level which means that whenever someone views a setting that service bulletin and manuals will be there. We can also attach notes, settings calculation, and settings files to each specific relay.

The IPS staff is very knowledgeable and responsive to our needs. Support is excellent with the use of Netviewer. Support via Netviewer allows IPS to walk customers through problems and to provide onsite training.

We have found IPS to be very dedicated to customer service. They have worked hard to meet our needs during all phases of the project. IPS has also demonstrated a willingness to develop and implement customer-specific solutions.
